SNC BRAWLERS, a short film created at St. Norbert College by gamers for gamers, marks a new level of creativity arising on campus grounds. It was created to fulfill two major purposes, but also serves on multiple personal levels as well. This project has been a dream of mine for some time, and I’m enthralled to have been able to turn it into a reality.

First, it is a tribute to Nintendo’s recent release entitled Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii, which came out on March 9th in the states. Facing numerous release setbacks, this title has been the number one anticipated game for the past two years in the eyes of Nintendo enthusiasts. With thirty-five distinguished playable characters to choose from, Brawl offers intense four person multiplayer action for gamers of all ages. This title marks the third release of one of the most cherished Nintendo series available to date.

Secondly, this short film is a means for creatively tying in the lively passions of gamers into something real, something more than just a production to express our love for the game. The four members of the cast, some of my best friends on SNC soil, are not just playing these parts – they are the characters themselves. By naturally acting out the personalities of these characters, they are revealing what lies within them and celebrating these human qualities. In this way, SNC BRAWLERS is trying to offer a sort of humorous and completely honest insight on who we are as human beings.

We can be the virtuous hero, Naked Snake, who fights with serious finesse and and a hard-edged mission-oriented attitude. Or we can take on the cockiness of the ultra speedy Sonic the Hedgehog, who leaves no room for competition in his midst. At other times, we may find ourselves acting as Mario, the classic balanced hero who upholds an optimistic and carefree mindset admired by all. Yet there is still room for us to “behave like monkeys” as Diddy Kong literally does, presenting a totally natural urge to let loose and act without regret. Life seems to be a fluctuating balance between these four characters; however, it is not limited to merely these specific personas which I have mentioned. Each character we have come to appreciate and love, whether they are found in video games or elsewhere, serve as a mirror in which we can look into ourselves and understand just who we really are.

Through this memorable experience, the cast and I have come to connect with each other on entirely new levels. The bonds created during the filming of this movie live on and have led to the creation of an incredibly potent subculture at St. Norbert College. We are no longer separate individuals, but unified as a family who appreciates and understands the beauty in working together toward a common love. Together, we have found something to live for: our deep-rooted passions… and each other. We have come to understand that it’s not about being what we want to be, but instead, just being ourselves. This is the most comfortable and rewarding thing we can do, and it has served us well.

For all it’s worth, enjoy the epic collaboration that is SNC BRAWLERS, brought to you by Scott Werley Design and Townhouse VII ’08-‘09. Cheers!

New Media Art - Spring 2008

A shortened version of the original track featuring the one and only Monica VonRueden (SNC ‘10). This was filmed in De Pere, Wisconsin on and around the St. Norbert College campus when night fell upon our quiet small town. I had been desiring to make this video since last summer (2007) when my good friend introduced me to this incredibly soothing track. Luckily, my New Media Art class gave me the chance to make it happen! I am deeply greatful for having this opportunity to collaborate with one of my fellow graphic design majors whom is both talented and beautiful. I would highly recommend purchasing the Late Night Alumni album if you feel the sincere sound and lyrics. Enjoy!
